In a world where sports have long been considered a male-dominated domain, Anaya Sehgal is proving that talent and the right support system can break barriers. Born in 2008 in Hong Kong, Anaya’s journey in football began at the tender age of four. Today, she is a rising star in Singapore’s Women’s Premier League.

We don’t know why and how. But she showed interest in football at a very early age,” said Anuj, father of Anaya.

Anaya was lucky enough to have supportive parents who recognised her talent and decided to provide the best possible platforms to promote her growth. She joined the Hong Kong FC at just seven years old, training with some of the best young talents in the city. By the time she was 10 years old, she had earned a spot in Hong Kong’s U-12 team.

Anuj, who previously had no connection with football, secured a Level I coaching license from Hong Kong so that he could contribute more in the development of Anaya as a footballer.

In 2021, the family relocated to Singapore, where Anaya continued her football journey. She joined JSSL FC, one of Singapore’s largest academies, and played for their U-13, U-15, and U-17 girls teams and U14 boys team. The right-footed central attacking midfielder quickly gained the attention of the coaches, leading to a breakthrough in 2024 when she signed with Tampines Rovers FC, a top-tier club in Singapore’s Women’s Premier League. JSSL Academy is affiliated with the TRFC club. At just 15, she was the youngest player in the squad of TRFC, competing against seasoned professionals. Her team finished seventh in the league, however, her performance caught the attention of Lion City Sailors, the reigning WPL champions, who offered her a contract. Recently, she made her debut for the defending champions.

Despite her success, Anaya and her family are aware of the challenges that come with pursuing a career in women’s football. With a shorter professional lifespan compared to men’s football, they are ensuring she has an alternate plan for life after sports. However, their support for her passion remains unwavering. They even explored opportunities in India’s IWL, but the requirement to stay in India for an extended period would have impacted her studies. For now, she is shuttling between the roles as a footballer and a grade 10 student. Just like any other footballer, she wants to represent India.

“I had discussions with clubs from Delhi and Bengaluru regarding a potential move. However, we are yet to find a solution where she can pursue professional football without compromising on academics,” Anuj continued.

Anuj believes that sports instill discipline, and focus in children, qualities that extend far beyond the field. “Parents should encourage their children to play sports. It teaches them focus, teamwork, and discipline—qualities that are invaluable in life,” he says. He is also working as a volunteer in India Khelo Football, a not-for-profit initiative, and Anaya is the brand ambassador of the same.

Anaya’s story is a reminder that with the right support, young girls can excel in sports and make a name for themselves. In a patriarchal society like India, stories like this have the potential to challenge the existing norms.

For parents hesitant to let their daughters take up sports, Anaya Sehgal’s journey is a shining example of what’s possible with the support of parents.
