From Scottish Championship to ISL

He switched his allegiance to Rangers in 2019, one of the most successful clubs in Scotland. Greg Stewart won the Scottish Premiership in the 2020-21 season with Rangers FC. Following that stint, Stewart joined Jamshedpur FC. In his first season in India, which was played in Goa in isolation due to COVID, he won the ISL, scoring 10 goals and assisting 10 times in 21 matches. His magnificent free-kick against the Kerala Blasters announced his arrival on Indian soil during this period.

After a brief period with Jamshedpur FC, Stewart joined Mumbai City FC and won the ISL shield again. In the 2022-23 season, he played 27 matches, scored 14 goals, and provided 12 assists, contributed to 26 goals. Last year, Greg scored 3 times and assisted 6 times. He has the experience of 66 matches in India under his belt which makes him a valuable addition for the Mariners.

What to expect from a 34-year-old attacker?

Greg is not only a phenomenal attacker, but a versatile player with high technical ability and creativity. He excels in the opponent’s half with the ball, delivering precise passes into the box that often create chaos for opponent teams. He and Dimi Petratos, with ample help from Sahal, can form a deadly duo for the Kolkata giants. The set-pieces of the Mariners will become more dangerous for the opposition after this addition.

Stewart will not only help the team with goals but his assists will also be a major factor in this year’s success. While Greg may not start every match ahead of Dimi Petratos, even a solid 10 minutes from him can secure a win for the team. His experience in ISL and the Indian conditions will play a significant role. The other two Scottish players in the camp, Jason Cummings and Jamie Maclaren can help to acclimatise to the conditions.
