After an action-packed opening week filled with drama and late goals, the Super League Kerala (SLK) returns this weekend with three enticing fixtures. With every team now having tasted their first bit of competition, Matchweek 2 could be pivotal in setting the tone for the season ahead.
Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC vs Forca Kochi FC (Oct 10, Friday – CSN Stadium)
The capital city gears up for its second home game as Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC take on Forca Kochi at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. Kombans suffered a 2–3 defeat to Kannur Warriors in Matchweek 1, despite Viknesh’s brilliant late free-kick. Ronald impressed in attack, but defensive errors again proved costly. They’ll now aim to correct course against familiar foes, though history doesn’t favour them. Kombans lost both their encounters against Forca Kochi in the inaugural season. They’ll be eager to overturn this record in front of their home fans. Forca Kochi, meanwhile, endured heartbreak last week after a 1–2 loss to Calicut FC courtesy of a 92nd-minute goal. Nijo Gilbert was lively on the flanks, while Dutch striker Van Kessel’s debut added attacking energy. With both sides seeking their first win, CSN is set for a tense and tactical battle under the Friday night lights.
Calicut FC vs Thrissur Magic FC (Oct 11, Saturday – EMS Corporation Stadium)
Calicut FC will take the field brimming with confidence after their dramatic 2–1 victory over Forca Kochi. Midfielder Arun Kumar’s stoppage-time strike sealed the win and showed Calicut’s fighting spirit. However, the gameplay appeared far from settled. Coach Ever Demaldé will want to build on that momentum while shoring up the midfield transitions. Thrissur Magic FC, meanwhile, are looking to recover from a 0–1 defeat to Malappuram FC in their opener. Despite enjoying long spells of possession, they lacked the finishing touch, and Trinidadian striker Marcus Joseph struggled to find rhythm. Interestingly, even though Thrissur Magic finished bottom of the table last season, they remain one of the few sides that managed to stay unbeaten against Calicut FC.
Malappuram FC vs Kannur Warriors FC (Oct 12, Sunday – Payyanad Stadium)
Sunday’s clash at Payyanad is arguably the marquee fixture of the week. Malappuram FC began their title defence with a 1–0 win over Thrissur Magic, powered by Roy Krishna’s calm penalty. However, history stands against them in this matchup. Kannur Warriors defeated Malappuram in both their meetings last season. The Warriors have already begun this campaign on a high, edging past Kombans FC 3–2 in a five-goal thriller. Abdou Karim, with his I-League pedigree, was the heartbeat of their attack. Expect an open, attacking battle at Payyanad, where both sets of fans will create one of the most electric atmospheres in SLK.
