Malappuram FC got their first win of the campaign, edging out Thrissur Magic FC in front of a sea of blue at Manjeri Payyanad Stadium. Roy Krishna’s 72nd-minute penalty was the difference in a game marked by drama, fatigue, and countless cramp stoppages.

The first half belonged to Thrissur Magic FC, who kept 56% possession and fired six shots, four of them on target. Bibin Ajayan tested the Malappuram goalkeeper early on, while at the other end, Roy Krishna and captain Faslu wasted a golden chance in the 16th minute.

The half also saw injury setbacks: Salmanul Faris was subbed off with cramps, and later, captain Faslu pulled his hamstring. A rash tackle by Lenny Rodrigues earned him a yellow, while Marcus Joseph’s free-kick just before half-time went over the bar. Despite the pressure, the score stayed 0–0 at the break.

The second half swung when Brazilian forward John Kennedy entered the fray for Malappuram. He almost scored with a zero-angle shot in the 68th minute before substitute Senthamil fouled inside the box four minutes later. The referee pointed to the spot, and Roy Krishna buried the penalty. The Thrissur goalkeeper dived the right way but couldn’t keep it out.

The stadium erupted, and the Ultras of Malappuram celebrated with a Poznań, bouncing in unison. Soon after, Krishna missed a sitter while Kennedy forced another save. Thrissur pushed with late substitutions, but fatigue crippled both sides. Players fell with cramps at regular intervals, prompting fans to nickname it the “Super Cramps League.” After seven minutes of added time, the whistle blew with Malappuram holding on for a 1–0 win.

Standout Performances

  • Roy Krishna once again showed his pedigree. A proven scorer in the A-League, a Golden Boot winner in the ISL, and now finding the net in SLK — Krishna can score anywhere.
  • John Kennedy provided the spark Malappuram needed. His pace and fearless shooting turned the tide.
  • Mailson Alves, the Brazilian captain of Thrissur, played a proper leader’s game. A two-time ISL champion with Chennaiyin FC, he organized the defense and fought till the end.
  • On the flip side, Marcus Joseph of Trinidad and Tobago had a poor outing. He failed to orchestrate Thrissur’s attack, leaving them blunt in the final third.

The result leaves Malappuram FC celebrating a hard-earned three points in front of their electric home crowd, while Thrissur Magic FC must regroup quickly. With bigger fixtures ahead, both teams will know they can’t afford another night where the spotlight was stolen by cramps rather than football.
