FC Goa Bolsters Defense with Aakash Sangwan Signing

FC Goa has bolstered their defensive line-up with the signing of left-back Aakash Sangwan from Chennaiyin FC. The 28-year-old arrives on a three-year deal, bringing a wealth of experience and attacking prowess to the Goan side.

Sangwan carved a niche for himself during his two-year stint with the Marina Machans. He established himself as a dependable starter, featuring in 48 matches and contributing directly to 12 goals. While his defensive duties were paramount, Sangwan showcased his attacking abilities with 2 goals and 10 assists across his time at Chennaiyin FC.

A product of the Minerva Academy, Sangwan’s professional journey began with Minerva Punjab FC in the I-League. He was part of the historic Minerva Punjab team that lifted the I-League trophy in the 2017-18 season. He then spent a season with Churchill Brothers before returning to Punjab with RoundGlass Punjab FC. He played 32 matches for the Punjab-based club before making the switch to Chennaiyin FC.

The last two seasons have seen Sangwan develop into a consistent and well-rounded defender. He garnered praise for his spectacular Olympic goal against NorthEast United FC, a goal that showcased his attacking instincts as a defender. Furthermore, his ability to seamlessly transition from defense to offense proved valuable throughout his time with Chennaiyin FC, as evidenced by the five assists he registered from the left-back position.

Sangwan’s arrival at FC Goa presents an interesting situation at left-back. Jay Gupta, who primarily plays center-back, impressed in the left-back role last season. It will be intriguing to see how Head Coach Manolo Marquez utilizes both players and determines who takes the starting position.

Sangwan’s signing brings not only experience but also a touch of Haryana pride to FC Goa. He and Gurmeet Singh are the only two players from Haryana who are playing currently in the Indian Super League. Other players from Haryana like Sumeet Passi and Himanshu Jangra are now plying their trade in I-league.

FC Goa has undoubtedly secured a valuable asset in Aakash Sangwan. His defensive solidity, combined with his attacking threat, will be a welcome addition to their backline as they look to challenge for silverware in the upcoming season.
