From barefoot games in paddy fields to lighting up the Super League Kerala, Md. Sinan’s football journey is rooted in simplicity and quiet ambition. The Kannur Warriors forward emerged as one of the standout local talents of the league, earning the Best Emerging Player award and a call-up to the Kerala Senior Football Team. As he now represents the state in the Santosh Trophy, Sinan reflects on the people, moments, and choices that shaped his rise.
How did football first enter your life? What were those early days like?
“I began playing football in paddy fields with my uncle, just like many kids in Kerala. Those games were informal and full of joy. When I was in fifth standard, my grandfather noticed my interest and enrolled me in formal coaching. That step gave my football a proper direction.”
Every player has a turning point. When did you realise football was more than just a game?
“I have been a big fan of Lionel Messi since childhood. When I was in seventh standard, I began to understand what professional football really meant: that it was possible to build a career, earn a living, and achieve something meaningful by following my passion. That realisation was my turning point.”
What were the biggest challenges you faced while coming up as a young player?
“Fortunately, I did not face many major obstacles in terms of support. My family and close friends always stood by me. Also, I grew up in a locality where football was a way of life. At the same time, I attended many trials and faced rejection on multiple occasions. Those moments were difficult, but I always believed that my time would come if I continued to work hard and stay patient.”
Before Super League Kerala, what level of football were you playing regularly?
“Before the Super League Kerala, I was playing university and club football consistently. I represented Yenepoya University in inter-university tournaments, which played a major role in my development. Alongside that, I played for FC Mangalore in the Bangalore Division League and also represented my college teams regularly.”
Joining Kannur Warriors was a big step. How did that opportunity come?
“A close friend of mine, Sachin (Sachin Sunil of Kannur Warriors FC), informed me about the trials for Kannur Warriors. I attended the trials and gave it my best. The head coach, Shafeeq (Shafeeq Hassan Madathil), was impressed with my performance, and that is how I signed for the club.”

What was the biggest difference between local football and playing on a big stage like SLK?
“Playing at that level was a completely different experience compared to local league football. I was thrilled and extremely eager to perform when I got the opportunity, though there was a bit of pressure as well,” (he said with a chuckle). “The feeling of playing in front of such a large and passionate crowd is something I honestly can’t describe in words.”
What are your short-term goals and long-term dreams?
“Like any footballer, my biggest dream is to wear the blue jersey of the India national football team one day. At the state level, I would love to win the Santosh Trophy representing Kerala Senior Football Team. As of now, I have not signed for any other club. My focus is on improving my game and being ready when the right opportunity comes.”

How was the atmosphere at Kannur Warriors, especially with senior and foreign players?
“The atmosphere at Kannur Warriors was excellent and very supportive. The coaches, senior players, and foreign professionals all helped me grow. They would personally speak to me after matches or training sessions, point out my mistakes, and explain how to correct them. That kind of guidance created a wonderful learning environment and gave me confidence.”
For Sinan, the journey still feels unfinished. The Super League Kerala gave him a platform. Now part of the Kerala Santosh Trophy squad, he is focused on the next training session rather than the next headline.
