Calicut FC Ready For Kerala Premier League

Following a dominant run in franchise football, Calicut FC is officially transitioning toward the traditional Indian football ladder. After establishing themselves as one of the most professionally managed sides in the Super League Kerala (SLK), the club is now ready to test its mettle in the Kerala Premier League (KPL). They were the winners of the inaugural edition of Super League Kerala and were the league leaders last season.

While the SLK has been a massive success in terms of fan engagement and professionalism, it presents a structural challenge for ambitious clubs. As a standalone competition, it lacks a direct link to the national football pyramid. Also, the season is brief with just 10 league matches. The duration of the league is only 2.5 months, which will not help the players to develop.

For a club with long-term aspirations, this leaves two distinct paths to the national stage. They could attempt a Direct Corporate Entry into the top tiers, which allows them to maintain a high-profile squad but requires massive capital. Alternatively, they can take the KPL Route, a less expensive but tougher path where the playing field changes drastically. Top Indian stars often migrate to national-level clubs during the KPL season. Also, foreigners are not allowed to be registered in lower divisions.

Football experts often remark that the lower divisions of the Indian football pyramid are the toughest leagues in the nation due to their unpredictable nature and intense competition. However, Calicut FC is ready to embrace the challenge as they aim for a steady climb toward the national top flight.

For the leadership at Calicut FC, the KPL is as important as SLK. The club views the league as a vital scouting ground to identify and refine talent. By participating in the KPL, the club ensures their roster remains match-ready year-round, creating a seamless transition into the next SLK season. The long-term vision is the gradual progression through the top divisions of Indian football. In fact, as early as last season, the club had already begun hinting at their intent to reach the I-League (rebranded now as Indian Football League).

While the backroom staff has seen minor adjustments, the core of the technical team remains intact. Head Coach Biby Thomas and Hussain P.A. will continue to lead the side, and a few players from the SLK squad will continue. Active scouting has been done to bolster the squad for the specific demands of the KPL.

Despite their reputation as a powerhouse franchise with passionate backing, the club is taking a pragmatic approach to its KPL budget. The leadership emphasized that their spending will be at par with other KPL competitors. It must be noted that the average expenditure to run an SLK club is around seven crores per season, as compared to 30 lakhs in KPL.

One of the biggest question marks surrounding this move is the fan turnaround. Calicut FC matches in the SLK were a spectacle, often drawing crowds of 30,000 passionate supporters. However, the KPL historically lacks the glitz and star power of franchise football. Even a one-fourth turnout compared to their SLK average would be a massive positive for the club and a statement of their organic drawing power.

Despite the transition, the winning mentality remains the club’s defining trait. For the upcoming season, the aim is not merely to participate but to secure the KPL title.

Our participation in the KPL is a strategic move to strengthen youth scouting and provide a competitive platform for developing emerging players. This aligns with the club’s broader objective of strengthening the football development ecosystem by giving young players greater exposure to structured competition.– VK Mathews, Chairman, Calicut FC (via CFC Instagram).
